JOURNEY: PER - JNB return.

LOYALTY SCHEME: South African Airways has their own loyalty scheme. Alternatively you can earn points and status credits with their Australian partner, Virgin Australia.

FLIGHT TIME: 10 hours.

BAGGAGE: One checked bag up to 23kg each plus two carry-on items up to 7kg in total.

CHECK-IN: Check in at Perth Airport is swift and operated by Qantas staff. Be prepared to have carry-on luggage weighed.

THE LOUNGE: South African Airways has recently opened a world class First and Business Lounge in Johannesburg airport and is accessible dependent on your class of ticket or partner status. The lounge comes complete with a computer workstation, boardroom, bar and buffet.

THE SEAT: Width - 17 inches. Pitch 33.5 inches. There are 216 economy class seats and 38 flat bed business class seats.

DINING: There are two options served, a beef curry and a chicken pasta. The curry is a solid choice and uses authentic South African flavours. It comes with a side salad and chocolate dessert which are fresh and balanced. There's a selection of South African wines and beers which are offered throughout the flight. A hot breakfast is served 2 hours before landing which consists of eggs, sausages, fruit salad and a croissant. A continental option is also available.

ENTERTAINMENT: The entertainment system offers a great selection of new release films and TV series. The touch screen is responsive, however the headphone jack can drop in and out. There is no power to charge laptops.

SERVICE: Service is mostly friendly and hospitable. The staff accommodate requests such as blankets and water promptly and with a smile. They're smartly presented and eloquently spoken.

VERDICT: South Africa Airways offers a comfortable flight from Perth to South Africa. With friendly service, good food and reasonably priced airfares it's a great option for those who are wanting to discover all that South Africa has to offer.
