L'Horizon Resort and Spa, PALM SPRINGS
By Rhiannon Taylor, August 2016
It's hard not to step back in to a Hollywood era when you check-in at L'Horizon. Shades on, vintage SL Mercedes parked out front; it has a total movie-star vibe. Architecturally designed by William F. Cody for an oil tycoon back in the 1950's, the revamp of the property retains it's charm with mod furniture and geometric printed rugs and curtains.
Staff make you feel at home and your bungalow comes with an engraved plaque bearing your name for some serious VIP treatment. A short stroll from your bungalow is the gleaming pool; it's not huge, but it's open 24/7. If you're keen to risk it, a midnight skinny dip doesn't go astray. The restaurant, SoPa, was closed during our off-peak visit but there's a limited menu available at the pool bar. It's hard to fault this upscale Palm Spring's resort.
THE TURN DOWN
FEEL: Desert Mod.
DESIGNER: The formidable Steve Hermann.
A BIT OF HISTORY: Built in 1952 by Hollywood Jack Wrather (Lone Ranger, Lassie) as a holiday hideaway for his family, the site that is now L'Horizon Resort and Spa. It has played host to Marilyn Monroe and Richard Nixon, to name drop a few.
LOCATION: Hidden beside private hedging, the discreet entrance to L'Horizon Resort and Spa can be confusing. Located on the south end of Palm Springs, it's a 5 minute drive (max) to the city centre.
RATES: From $317 USD.
WIFI: Yes, free.
RESTAURANT: When we visited, it was low season so the restaurant, SoPa, was closed during the week.
BAR: The pool bar is open until 9pm.
ACCOMMODATION CATEGORY: Resort.
ROOMS: L'Horizon Resort and Spa has 25 bungalows that are single story and surround the pool. They're all spacious, with wrap around windows letting in an abundance of light. Opt for a bungalow with an outdoor shower, it's great for some respite from the desert heat and the backdrop is a set of jaw dropping mountains. The beds are king-sized with Frette sheets and slippers and the huge bathrooms come with toothbrushes and Le Labo body products.
MINI BAR: The mini bar at L'Horizon Resort and Spa is taken very seriously. Dean and Deluca goods overflow the mini-basket, alongside artisan chocolates. There's full sized bottles of whiskey, which seems apt given your desert location. And should you desire, a Jonathan Adler bottle opener can be yours at $110.
POOL/GYM/SPA: The pool is the heart of the resort and it's open 24/7, wink wink. Surrounded by tidy lawns and floaty cabanas there's not much need to venture out. There's a fitness centre, if that tickles your fancy. Splurge at the spa, where treatments are carried out in air-conditioned outdoor cabanas, while therapists bring you fresh juice.
TURN DOWN SERVICE: Yes, complete with cookies, water and slippers.
